A Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) of the atmosphere refers to a rapid rise in temperatures in the stratosphere that is sometimes linked to the onset of cold weather in winter.

In this video, we describe how this occurs and why rising temperatures at altitude can sometimes bring cold weather to the UK.
